September 7, 2006 — United Way of Clare County volunteers have set their sights on $230,000 in the upcoming fall fund-raising campaign.

Kick Off Breakfast 2006

Ron Verch, Campaign Chair and President of Mid Michigan Community College, announced the drive’s 2006-2007 goal at a Kick Off breakfast on September 7th held at the Doherty Hotel.
Clare County United Way funds services in eight impact areas: basic needs and emergency assistance, supporting and strengthening families, drug and alcohol abuse, health and wellness, children and youth, mental health, crisis intervention and assisting seniors.

Terry Moore, President of MidMichigan Health was the keynote speaker at the breakfast. Terry’s speech was very upbeat and inspirational. Mr. Moore spoke of the Clare County community’s ability to pull together and help each other.
The breakfast was generously sponsored by Mid Michigan Community College, Ron and Peg Verch, Witbeck’s, Gwladys and Fred Austin, Martinrea International, Chemical Bank, Isabella Bank and Trust, and Clare Hardware.

Technology Grants

The United Way was recently the recipient of nearly $9,000 in technology grants. These funds enabled them to update computer equipment; acquire high speed internet and have a new website designed by a professional. United Way explores other means of funding whenever possible so the money does not come out of the annual campaign but rather goes to help people in our community as the donors intend.

Group Workcamp

This past summer United and Volunteer Center of Clare County hosted its second Group Work Camp (GWC). Campers came from several different states to work on homes in Clare County. The Clare County Enterprise Community made GWC possible with funding. The campers stayed at Harrison Community Schools (in 2004 they stayed at Farwell Area Schools) while in town from June 11th – 17th. While the GWC volunteers were here they did everything from build wheelchair ramps to exterior painting of houses. United Way and the Enterprise Community look forward to hosting another Group Work Camp in the future.
